Why Mexico City private aviation operates out of Toluca
Mexico City International Airport (AICM / MMMX) runs at capacity and keeps restrictions that, in practice, shut out private charter: slot priority goes to scheduled airlines and there is no room for on-demand business aviation. As a result, every private flight for the Mexico City metro area is organized out of Toluca (MMTO).
This isn't a commercial preference — it's how the central Mexico airport system works. Toluca has a long runway at 8,460 ft elevation, operates 24 hours, holds customs and immigration for international flights, and concentrates the FBO infrastructure a charter needs.
What departure from a Toluca FBO looks like
Nothing like a commercial terminal. You arrive 15 to 20 minutes before wheels-up, walk straight into the FBO, your bags are loaded while you have a coffee, and you walk to the ramp. No check-in queues, no baggage belts, no mass security screening.
On international flights, immigration and customs are handled inside the same FBO, typically in 10 to 15 minutes. Vehicle access to the ramp can be arranged on request, subject to each FBO's policy.
Drive times from the Mexico City metro area
From Santa Fe, 35 to 45 minutes via the México–Toluca highway. From Interlomas and Huixquilucan, 40 to 50. From Polanco and Lomas, about an hour. From the south of the city — San Ángel, Coyoacán, Pedregal — budget 70 to 90 minutes.
Highway traffic is the biggest variable: Friday afternoons and Monday mornings can add 30 minutes. We set wheels-up around when you actually leave home or the office, not the other way around.
